Group F of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2019) rendered its final verdict on Tuesday after the third round of matches. Benin, the surprise package of the group, held defending champions Cameroon to a goalless draw to the share spoils at one point each which improved the Squirrels’ total points to three from three games, enough to finish among the best third-placed teams.
This is the first time ever for Benin to reach this stage of the competition. They are yet to record a win in an AFCON finals.
Cameroon, who were hoping to top the group, eventually emerged second with five points following Ghana’s 2-0 win over Guinea Bissau.
Jordan Ayew put the Black Stars ahead a minute after the break while Atletico Madrid defensive midfielder Thomas Partey doubled the lead by the 72nd minute.
Ghana also have five points but with a better goal difference over Cameroon. Guinea Bissau are out of the competition.
In the Round of 16, Benin will meet Morocco on July 5 while Cameroon will slug it out with Nigeria on July 6. On July 8, Ghana will take on the runners-up of Group E, whose third games will hold later today.
