Enyimba FC star Dare Ojo has spoken of his pleasure at leading the side in an official game for the first time ever. The versatile midfielder was the team’s surprise captain in their Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Match Day One game against Lobi Stars in Makurdi on Sunday.

With the team’s captain Mfon Udoh still out injured and vice-captain Chinonso Okonkwo left on the bench, former Kwara United midfielder, Ojo was handed the captain’s armband by coach Paul Aigbogun. “It gives me so much joy to be able to captain this team in a league match,” Ojo told www.aclsports.com

“I want to thank God for his grace. It was an honour for me to captain the team in the absence of our captain and I’m happy that we got a result in the game,” he added.

Ojo joined the People’s Elephant in 2016 and it was Aigbogun who gave him his Enyimba debut. Enyimba’s first home game of the season comes up against Heartland in Calabar on Wednesday. Both teams drew their respective opening games although Enyimba’s draw came in the game at Makurdi. Ojo assures the fans that they will get the season started in Calabar.

“It will be a difficult game. Although Heartland just promoted to the NPFL, it is a derby game so they will come out firing but we have enough quality to beat them. I know the fans expect much from us and I’m assuring them that by God’s grace we will come out victorious,” said Ojo.

Wednesday’s Oriental Derby at the UJ Esuene Stadium is one of ten Match Day Two games scheduled to hold in the Nigerian top division.
