The Nigerian weightlifters at the ongoing African Junior/Youths Weightlifting Championships in Uganda have won 18 medals. The Championships is in preparation of the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Argentina.

In the youth category, Joseph Edidong (-62kg) won two gold and one silver medal while in the juniors, Favour Omovigho (-62kg) gave Nigeria two silver and one bronze medals.

Michael Anyalewechi (- 85 kg) on his part won two gold and one silver in Kampala. On Wednesday, the trio of Mary Uweh (-48kg), Islamiyat Yusuf (-53kg) and Fatima Yakuba (-58kg) won nine gold medals.

Despite the usual problem of funds the lifters departed the country on October 6th, 2017 (last Friday) for the championship.
