In an announcement at the NFF headquarters in Abuja on Friday, league chairman, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, stressed the significance of the date as part of the federation’s strategy to align domestic football calendars with continental competitions.

“We have fixed August 22, 2025, as the kickoff date for the new NPFL season, and it will run through to May 24, 2026,” Elegbeleye stated.

“This is part of our broader plan to stabilize the calendar and give clubs enough time for preseason preparations and rest.”

The NPFL boss also confirmed that the full league format of 38 match days will be retained, with matchday schedules, and player registration guidelines will be released in the coming weeks.

However, four teams that will be promoted to the NPFL from the second division – Nigeria National League – have not emerged, but the playoffs is expected to hold in July.
