David Villa has been ruled out of Tuesday World Cup qualifier between Spain and Liechtenstein due to injury, according to the Spanish Football Federation.

The former Valencia man retired three years ago from international football, but his return last month has been cut short by a strain injury picked up in training.

“Having picked up a strain in Sunday’s training, it was decided he would leave the squad,” Sefutbol said.

Villa, who came on as a substitute in La Roja’s 3-0 win against Italy, is Spain’s all-time highest scorer, having scored 59 goals in 98 appearances.
