Europa League finalists and top Spanish LaLiga side Atletico Madrid will face Nigeria’s Super Eagles in a friendly on May 22 in Uyo, Southern Nigeria.
The match was announced at a press conference in Lagos on Thursday morning which had in attendance the relevant parties; the LaLiga, the Nigeria Football Federation and SuperSport, the broadcaster.
This landmark announcement signals the first time that a LaLiga team will travel to Nigeria to play in a friendly match.
The historic contest will take place thanks to SuperSport, the LaLiga broadcaster in most African countries, while both LaLiga and the Nigerian Football Federation have been heavily involved in organising the event.
The game at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium also known as Nest of Champions will allow Nigerian football fans to enjoy an array of some of the stars of the world’s best league up close.
Atletico Madrid will contest the Europa League final in Lyon, France on Wednesday, May 16 before rounding off their league season on May 19. Diego Simeone and his players are expected to leave for Nigeria a day after their final league game to honour the match.
This match is being played under the umbrella of the LaLiga Foundation’s LaLiga World Challenge programme, through which friendlies are organised between LaLiga clubs and local teams all over the globe.
