The 2018 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) season began on the 7th of April as champions, Nasarawa Amazons played host to FC Robo Queens. The game ended in a stalemate as both teams settled for a point each to kick-off their league campaign.

The opening fixture alongside three others, which include two South-South derbies, Edo Queens vs Ibom Angels and Delta Queens vs Rivers Angels all ended in a goalless affair. With the only impressive goalless draw coming in the game between league debutants, Jokodolu babes of Ogbomosho against a strong Adamawa Queens side.

On a positive note; Bayelsa Queens, Sunshine Queens of Akure and Sure Babes of Ilorin all recorded wins against their opponents. A brace from Joy Jerry ensured that Bayelsa Queens went home with an important away win over Confluence Queens of Lokoja.

Another impressive result after the first round of fixtures was the 4-1 thrashing of Abia Angels by Sunshine Queens at the Akure township stadium. Goals from Patience Agbokadi and Precious Vincent gave the team from Akure a two goal cushion after the first 45mins. Favour Emmanuel however struck early in the second half to give Abia Angels a glimmer of hope, but the Akure based team responded well with two goals from Lola Phillips and Oyatheleme Tina to confirm all three points.

For Sure Babes, an 84th minute strike from Joy Okonkwo ensured the team from Ilorin sealed an important 1-0 victory over Heartland Queens of Owerri. While a late equaliser from Yetunde Fajobi of Osun Babes cancelled out Pato Moses’ strike to deny Pelican Stars of Calabar a crucial victory at the U.J Esuene Stadium.
