Nigeria Women Football League to kick-off in April

The new season of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) will commence on the 7th of April as the city of Lafia plays host to the opening fixture of the 2017/2018 season between Nasarawa Amazons FC and FC Robo Queens of Lagos.

This was revealed during the NWFL Club Congress which held at the Banquet Hall of Watercress Hotel, Ikeja – Lagos on Saturday in preparation for the new season. The league season which will be played in an abridged format due to the men’s World Cup and women’s World Cup in Russia and France respectively, divided all the teams into two groups of eight teams each.

The teams in Group A include: Confluence Queens,
Edo Queens, Sure Babes FC, Delta Queens, Rivers Angels, Taraba Queens, Bayelsa Queens, Ibom Angels while Group B comprises of: Adamawa Queens, Sunshine Queens, FC Robo Queens, Jokodolu Babes, Nasarawa Amazons, Sunshine Queens, Osun Babes FC, Pelican Stars.

Other week 1 games which will take place on Wednesday 11th of April include:

Edo Queens vs Ibom Angels
Confluence Queens vs Bayelsa Queens
Sure Babes vs Taraba Queens
Delta Queens vs Rivers Angels

Group B
Sunshine Queens vs Abia Angels
Pelican stars vs Osun Babes
Jokodolu Babes vs Adamawa Queens

Resolutions reached at the Congress include newly approved transfer fee for players. Premier League players transfer is now pegged at ₦200,000 and ₦100,000 for Pro League players; a measure which was introduced to prevent enslavement of players. Also, the deadline for payment of registration is 19th March while collection of licenses will end on or before 30th March, 2018.

The Congress then thanked the Amaju Pinnick led NFF board for their support and also the Edo state government for hosting the Super 4 in Benin. Also the board thanked the Lagos State Government for hosting the 2018 Women Football League Congress and the Champions Shield tournament.
