Tobi Amusan has lost her women’s 100m hurdles world record to Masai Russell after finishing second at the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday, www.aclsports.com reports.
Amusan had held the world record since the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, where she clocked 12.12 seconds in the semi-finals, before Russell, the reigning Olympic champion, ran 12.09 seconds at the Letzigrund to beat the Nigerian’s mark by 0.03 seconds in still conditions.
Amusan finished second in a season’s best 12.23 seconds, while Dutch athlete Nadine Visser was third in 12.34 seconds, also recording a season’s best.
Russell had already shown her potential earlier this season, running 12.14 seconds in May to become the second-fastest woman in history at the time.
The 26-year-old is now the first woman since Bulgaria’s Yordanka Donkova to simultaneously hold the Olympic title and 100m hurdles world record. Donkova achieved the feat after winning Olympic gold in 1988.
