Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has joined Scottish giants Rangers on a free transfer ACLSports.com can report.  Balogun has put pen to paper on a one-year contract with an option for a further year with the Gers following the expiration of his stay at Premier League outfit Brighton & Hove Albion.

“Rangers are today delighted to announce the signing of Nigerian international defender Leon Balogun on a 1-year deal, ” the club said in a statement on Friday.

The 32-year-old spent half of the 2019/2020 on loan at Championship side, Wigan, where his impressive performances were not just enough to save the Latics.

Balogun is the latest Nigerian at Rangers as he joins compatriot and new Super Eagles star, Joe Aribo who is a fan favourite at the Scottish club.

On why Balogun was signed, Rangers boss, Steven Gerrard, who is pleased with his latest acquisition, had this to say;

“I am pleased to secure the signature of Leon, ” Gerrard told the club website. “He is an experienced centre half who will add strength and depth to our squad.”

“His experience in the Premier League as well as his international pedigree strengthens our squad and will assist in the development of our young defenders, ” he added.

Balogun made his international debut for Nigeria in 2016 and has 32 caps to his name, and played in all three of their matches at the 2018 World Cup.

He joined Brighton in the summer of 2018 following a stint with the German side, Mainz 05 in Bundesliga.
