Rangers head coach Russell Martin has provided an update on the injury suffered by Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers, stressing it was not a serious one, www.aclsports.com reports.
The 30-year-old striker gave Rangers a major scare during their defeat to Viktoria Plzen at the Doosan Arena. He collapsed awkwardly after what looked like a twist to both his knee and ankle, with the Glasgow side still ahead on aggregate despite falling behind to the Czechs early in the second half.
Due to the nature of the injury, a stretcher was initially called but was not eventually used, as the Super Eagles star was helped off the pitch by members of the medical staff. He was immediately replaced by Danilo.
However, head coach Russell Martin has now revealed that the injury was a minor one and that the striker should be fit for the UEFA Champions League tie on Tuesday against Club Brugge.
“Cyriel’s is not as bad as everyone feared, so tomorrow will be too early, but we’re really hopeful he can be involved on Tuesday,” Martin said in quotes revealed by the BBC.
“Everyone feared the worst, the way he went off, but it was a small issue, but nowhere near as bad as it could’ve been.
“It’s a bit stiff and a bit sore still, but everyone will work really hard to make sure he’s given every chance to be fit for Tuesday,” the 39-year-old concluded.
Dessers was not named in the Rangers squad for Saturday’s League Cup visit of Alloa Athletic, but his imminent return will be a big relief for Rangers, and Eric Chelle, who might be looking to draft the striker in for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa next month.
