Nigeria’s most decorated wrestler, Odunayo Adekuoroye has been elected into the United World Wrestling (UWW) Athletes Commission.

The President of Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali told Aclsports.com in a chat on that an election was held at the just concluded World Wrestling championships and Adekuoroye was amongst the 7 to represent the interest of athletes on the UWW.

At the 2017 World Championship Odunayo Adekuoroye became the first Nigerian to win a silver medal thereby surpassing fellow Nierian, Ifeoma Ihenacho who won a double Bronze in 2009 and 2010 respectively.

The Sydney Olympic Gold medalist said Odunayo is currently one of the most popular female wrestlers on the world stage and it played a vital role.

“The election took place at the last world championships. Odunayo is currently one of the most popular female wrestlers on the world stage”.

“The NWF had no reservations in forwarding her as a candidate for the athlete commission position and we were not disappointed”, he said.

Igali noted that “This shows the steady progress we are making as a federation in all facets of development. We hope Odunayo will make valuable contributions to the athletes commission and in extension the welfare of athletes on the world stage”.

The Commonwealth Gold medallist, Odunayo Adekuoroye heaped praises on the President of the federation, her coach Purity Akuh and the entire Nigeria Wrestling Federation for their support.

Adekuoroye added that she’s very happy to be recognised by the UWW and athletes who voted in her favour.

“Honestly am on the right part, for UWW to recognize me am very happy, this is a great privilege to serve”, she said.

She said, “My President and my coach always believe in my capabilities to excel. They encourage and tell me not to give up on my way to the top”.

Despite Adekuoroye’s feat at the World championships in Paris, she returned into the country uncelebrated.
