NWPL Super 4: Rivers Angels eliminated, Delta Queens on track

Nigerian Women Premier League defending Champions Rivers Angels were on Tuesday eliminated from the NWPL Super Four tournament in Benin City with a game to spare.

Angels, already in the final of the AITEO Cup missed a chance to make it a back-to-back double when they lost 2-1 to Nasarawa Amazons, following an opening day 2-0 loss to Delta Queens.

Just like Monday’s loss to Delta Queens, Angels made the worst possible start when they went two goals down inside the opening half an hour.

Chinyere Igboamalu gave the Amazons a sixth minute lead before Mabel Effiom diverted Falconets star Anam Imo’s cross into her own net twenty minutes later to dig another hole for Edwin Okon’s Angels.

Substitute Mercy Amanze gave the defending Champions a lifeline in the second half but that was all they could muster with striker Chioma Wogu missing what could’ve been an equalizer at the death.

In Tuesday’s other game, Adebisi Saheed scored for a second game running as Delta Queens were held 1-1 by Bayelsa Queens.

Adebisi gave her side a 21st minute lead but Tessy Biahwo replied for Bayelsa eight minutes later to set up a keenly contested game.

Neither side could find a winner in the second half meaning that both sides still stay in the tournament with Rivers Angels the only team knocked out yet.

Nasarawa Amazons lead with maximum six points and are already assured of a place in Friday’s final while Delta Queens are second with four points. Bayelsa Queens are third with a solitary point with Rivers Angels bottom with no point.

Wednesday is being observed as a rest day in the competition which resumes on Thursday with the final round of group games.
