Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries football club, MFM FC, are back to winning ways after a narrow 1-0 victory over Rivers United in the NPFL on Sunday.

Chijioke Akuneto’s penalty in the first half proved decisive as they saw of Rivers United in front of their home fans in a week 17 encounter at the Soccer Temple.

It was a rather uninspiring tie as both sides struggled to get a grip of proceedings throughout the match.

MFM took an early lead as Akuneto converted from the spot after he was hacked down in the box in the 6th minute.

Arguably MFM’s best player on the day, the attacking midfielder dusted himself up to calmly slot past Akande Abiodun in goal for United to put MFM ahead at the break.

After the restart, the visitors looked the better side as they went in search of the elusive equaliser.

The Pride of Rivers did come close a number of times through Ossy Martins, who seemed to have arrived Lagos without this scoring boots.

Martins missed two chances to draw United level, including failing to capitalise on an error from MFM substitute goalkeeper, Olatunji Odekunle, late in the game.

The hosts held on for a valuable win and three points, their first at home since a 2-0 win over Bendel Insurance back on March 17, and also their first win in six NPFL matches.

For Stanley Eguma’s United, despite a spirited performance, they fail to build on their emphatic win over Rangers International in midweek.

On the NPFL table, MFM remain third in Group A on 27 points, while United are a further four points behind and seventh on log.
