A former Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) much feared striker George Akpabio has completed a return to the league after sealing a move to Rivers United, www.aclsports.com reports.

Akpabio was one of the league’s top scorers in the 2010/11 season when he donned the yellow and green colours of Plateau United. His exploit that season took him out of the country where he has been for over eight years.

Akpabio was the third highest goalscorer that season with eighteen (18) goals, only behind Ibrahim Ajani and Jude Aneke but the Jos-born player has now signed for 2020/21 Total CAF Confederation Cup campaigners Rivers United ahead of the new season.

The 27-year old last played for Israeli side Bnei Sakhnin in the 2018/19 league season but has been a free agent since the expiration of his contract in July 2019.

Rivers United head coach Stanley Eguma has been looking to add attacking talents to his side after completing a major transfer coup last week and ACLSports sources reveal that Akpabio is highly regarded by the former U23 assistant coach.

Akpabio joins United’s forward line that already consists of Stephen Michael Gopey, Malachy Ohawume and another returnee to the league Bobby Clement.

Rivers United had already completed the signing of Ifeanyi Anaemena and Theophilus Afelokhai from Enyimba as well as Godwin Aguda who is also returning after a brief spell in the Middle East.

The team are expected to begin pre-season preparations for the new league and continental campaign this month.
