Super Falcons goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, has been nominated for the 2025 Women’s Yachine Trophy, becoming the first Nigerian goalkeeper shortlisted for the prestigious Ballon d’Or honour, www.aclsports.com reports.
The 24-year-old’s nomination crowns an outstanding 2024/25 campaign with Paris FC, where she helped the club win the Coupe de France Féminine, saving two crucial penalties in the shootout victory. She also played a pivotal role in securing a spot in the French league playoffs.
Nnadozie’s brilliance extended to the international stage, where she was instrumental in Nigeria’s triumphant run at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Her performances powered the Super Falcons to an unbeaten campaign and a record-extending tenth continental title. She kept four clean sheets during the tournament and conceded only twice from open play, both in the final against hosts Morocco. Nnadozie was named the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper, winning the Golden Glove for her commanding presence and clutch saves.
Ahead of the tournament, Nnadozie secured a move to the English Women’s Super League, joining Brighton & Hove Albion in what is seen as a major step in her career.
Her nomination also puts her alongside Asisat Oshoala as the only Nigerian women to be shortlisted for a Ballon d’Or award. Oshoala received Ballon d’Or Féminin nominations in 2022 and 2023, becoming the first African woman to be nominated for the prestigious honour.
The Yachine Trophy, organised by France Football, was expanded in 2024 to honour the best female goalkeeper in the world. She could become the first African goalkeeper, male or female, to receive the award.
Also nominated for the 2025 Women’s Yachine Trophy are Ann-Katrin Berger (Germany), Cata Coll (Spain), Hannah Hampton (England), and Daphne van Domselaar (Netherlands).
The winner will be announced later this year in Paris.
