Chioma Cynthia Nweke opened Nigeria’s medal rush on the first day, storming to gold in the women’s 100m final with 11.62s. She later returned to anchor the women’s 4x100m team of Iyanuoluwa Bada, Maria Thompson and Olayinka Olajide to victory in 44.92s, finishing ahead of Burkina Faso (46.56s) and hosts Ghana (46.71s).
The men’s quartet of Chidera Ezeakor, Gafar Audu, James Taiwo Emmanuel and anchor Olaolu Olatunde matched the brilliance, edging Ghana in a nail-biting 4x100m finish with a season’s best of 39.74s.
Nigeria’s dominance continued in the 4x400m, as the women’s team of Favour Onyah, Patience Okon George, Anita Enaruna and Maria Thompson stormed to gold in 3:33.83. The men’s squad of Victor Sampson, Ezekiel Asuquo, David Akhalu and Gafari Badmus then added another emphatic win in 3:05.22.
As the championships progressed, Nigeria continued to shine in the individual events. Anita Itohan Enaruna smashed her personal best to win the women’s 200m in 23.91s, with compatriot Maria Thompson (24.01s) taking silver. In the men’s 100m, Olaolu Jason Olatunde struck gold in 10.60s, edging Ghana’s Kevin Arthur (10.63s).
The men’s 400m final proved another showcase of Nigerian dominance, as Gafari Badmus stormed to a lifetime best of 45.53s for gold, while Ezekiel Eno Asuquo secured silver in 46.38s. Ghana’s Mordecai Acheampong had to settle for bronze in 46.63s. To crown it all, Chidera Ezeakor delivered a blistering 20.77s in the men’s 200m, sealing another gold and denying Ghana yet another home victory.
From start to finish, Nigeria turned Accra into a stage of golden supremacy, cementing their status as the powerhouse of West African athletics.
