Rivers United star Muyiwa Adeola Fehintola has set his sight on achieving a personal milestone double of winning the Nigerian league and earning his first international cap for the Benin Republic national team this year, www.aclsports.com reports.

Fehintola, 24, is in his second season in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with former champions Rivers United after having represented Buffles du Borgu and Cotonsport in his home country, Benin.

His first season in Port Harcourt was largely for adaption as he was second choice to the unplayable Kazie Enyinnaya but he has now found more playing time this term, playing already more games at the midway stage than he did in the entirety of last season.

Winning a competitive league

Adeola Fehintola had featured for top teams in Benin Republic and consequently participated in CAF Inter Club competitions before joining Rivers United but he admits he has been faced with a different level of competition in the Nigerian league.

“The Nigerian league is a competitive league especially with the quality of talents. The team I’m playing for is also one of the best in the country and I’m very happy to be part of the team.

“The club is a big platform that most of the players are looking forward to pass through so I feel proud to be there,” began Fehintola to ACLSports.com

Rivers United won the NPFL title around two and half years ago, one year before Fehintola joined the team and he believes that winning it this season is very possible especially as they are currently second at the midway stage.

“Winning the league is a very possible task for us. There is just two points difference between us and Remo Stars at this point and we still have like nineteen games to play in the second round.

“I believe in my team because that’s our aim and target this season to end the season as winners. I believe my teammates are also working on the same target with concentration and determination to take the game one after the other,” he added.

A patriot ready for national call

While his name Muyiwa Adeola Fehintola looks Nigerian from the Western side of the populous nation, Fehintola was born and lives in Benin Republic, a country he claims to love “so much”.

He has not represented the senior national team previously but with the team achieving international recognitions under former Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr, Fehintola hopes his time to represent The Cheetahs of Benin may be here.

“The dream of every footballer is to play for their country so it’s the same for me. All I need is just a chance for a call-up and I will be ready to defend the badge because I love the country so much.

“I believe I’m good enough to represent the national team and if I get the chance, I will put all my efforts to show that I’m capable to do it,” said Fehintola.

Second place Rivers United, coached by former Nigeria international Finidi George are on the road to face seventeenth place Plateau United on Sunday as the second stanza of the 2024/2025 NPFL season begins.
