Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) volleyball player, Hamzat Yakmut revealed his intentions of leaving volleyball for archery in the coming days.

Hamzat Yakmut won a gold medal in the men’s archery event at the just concluded Bauchi State Sports Festival 2024 on Saturday.

Yakmut told www.aclsports.com  his plans of representing the state at various national championships as well as featuring for Nigeria at International tournaments.

He said, “This is my first time participating in an archery event but I am excited about winning a gold medal. When the instructors came around to sensitise people for the event, I decided to give it a trial. I feel I can go a long way in the event by representing the state at national tournaments.

“When the seminar of the archery event was ongoing, little did I know that I would become entangled with the sport. I felt nervous at first because techniques were different from other sports; they kept on encouraging the participants to give it a trial and I can tell you that I have fallen in love with the sport.

He further said, “I am thinking of taking up the sport and whoever is playing volleyball is a calculative individual; that is the more reason I decided to pick up the challenge to feature in the sport”.

Yakmut called on the State Government to make available the equipment of archery in order for athletes to train regularly.

He said, “I want to make an appeal to the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development to ensure we have an archery range in Bauchi State as this will make the sport grow exponentially. Over 100 athletes took part in the event and they have shown interest in archery.

“The next line of action for the authorities is to purchase equipment for the athletes for them to train regularly and make the state proud. I believe the Commissioner for Youth and Sports is a man of vision who will buy into the idea.”
