FISU 2025: LASU Queens representing Africa in football

Lagos State University (LASU) women’s football team, LASU Queens, are representing Africa at the 2025 FISU University World Cup Football in Dalian, China, www.aclsports.com reports..

They secured their place on the world stage by winning gold at the 11th Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games in Nigeria, defeating rivals University of Lagos 2-1 in the final.

The tournament, which opened with its ceremony, runs from September 17 to 28, 2025, and features student-athletes from 17 countries.

The women’s competition features eight teams, including two returning squads from previous FISU World Cups. Defending champions Beijing Normal University (China) lead Group B, joined by the University of Sydney (Australia). Lagos State University (Nigeria) is making its debut at the tournament.

Drawn in Group A, LASU Queens will face Shanghai University of Sport (China, hosts), the University of the Extreme South of Santa Catarina (Brazil), and the University of Valencia (Spain). Group B includes Beijing Normal University (China), University of Sydney (Australia), Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France (France), and Laval Rouge et Or (Canada).

LASU Queens kicked off their campaign on Wednesday, September 17, against the University of the Extreme South of Santa Catarina (Brazil) at 03:00 AM WAT at Suoywan Outer. They will face the University of Valencia (Spain) on Friday, September 19, at 04:30 AM WAT in Training Centre, before concluding their group stage against hosts Shanghai University of Sport (China) on Sunday, September 21, at 04:30 AM WAT in Training Centre.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals on September 25, with the bronze medal match and World Cup final following on September 27, setting the stage for an exciting week of high-level football and international competition.
