Nigeria Super Falcons played their best game yet at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup to beat co-hosts Australia 3-2 in stunning fashion on Thursday morning.

The talking point before kick-off was the decision from coach Randy Waldrum to start Asisat Oshoala from the bench while The Matildas struggled in the absence of Chelsea star Sam Kerr.

Nigeria, who came off with a goalless draw in their opening game against Canada, stepped it up against the co-hosts in Brisbane to nick their first win of the tournament. Forward Rasheedat Ajibade was instrumental before the introduction of Oshoala as she worked her way into the box to set up Uchenna Kanu for the equalizer after the hosts took the lead through Emily van Egmond.

Veteran Osinachi Ohale turned the game around for Nigeria in the second half by putting them ahead for the first time before Oshoala finished off from a tight angle to increase the lead by two. A late goal from Australia through Alanna Kennedy in stoppage only served as a mere consolation for the hosts as Nigeria took all three points.
