A board member of Borno state handball association, Hussaini Mohammed has said that the main target for Borno Spiders is to win the 2019 Prudent Energy Handball League.

Mohammed revealed that Borno Spiders is the only handball club side from North East Nigeria adding that the trophy will be dedicated to the Internally Displaced Persons in the state.

He said, “Preparations are in top gear for the team ahead of the first phase of the league. As you know, Borno Spiders are the only team from the North East in this league.

“Currently, the region is having serious security challenges but I can assure you that the main target of Borno Spiders is to win the league and dedicate it to the Internally Displaced Persons in Maiduguri.

“The board will work with the technical crew to achieve an excellent preparation of the Borno Spiders for the tournament. Everything legitimate would be done to ensure Borno Spiders triumph in Abuja.

Mohammed, who had plied his trade in Oman and Saudi Arabia in his heydays, expressed the hope that the female team (Topline Sparrows) will be revived before the end of 2019.

He said, “We have a program in the pipeline to revive Topline Sparrows (the female handball team) but the electioneering processes this year stalled the launching of the team. We have sponsors for the program and I am sure the female team will come back.

“The history of female handball is incomplete without mentioning Topline Sparrows because some of the top players represented Nigeria at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

He further said, “We have lifted the National title many times, represented the country at continental championships and made the country proud. In the nearest future, lovers of handball will see Topline Sparrows in action again”.

The first phase of the Prudent Energy Handball Premier League will hold in Abuja from the 13th to 25th May, 2019.
