Gombe United forward Abbani has beaten off stiff competition from Shooting Stars’ Abu Azeez and Sunshine Stars’ Joseph Abiodun to emerge winner of the Nigeria Professional Football League NPFL VAT Wonder Goal 9 for Match Day 28.

Abbani’s goal in his team’s 2-0 victory over El-Kanemi Warriors in a North-East derby finished top in a fierce contest of votes on the official website and Twitter handle of the League Management Company (LMC), organizers of the Nigerian league.

Votes on the LMC website were nearly evenly shared between Abbani and Abiodun but the Gombe United player came tops with 524 votes, compared to Abiodun’s 434, bringing his combined votes on the website and twitter to 582.

Ironically for former Enyimba star, Azeez, was the runaway leader on the LMC Twitter platform, gathering 53 percent of the total 305 votes, a development that might not be unconnected to his activity on the Social Media app but he ultimately fell far behind on the website polls where he picked just 50 of the total 1008 votes.

Abbani now joins the likes of Rabiu Ali, Wasiu Alalade, Shedrack Asiegbu and the inaugural winner Ayo Saka in winning the VAT Wonder Goal Award.

The pacy forward will receive a cash reward of N150,000 (Nigerian currency) and is expected to nominate a charity organization based in Gombe state for a statutory donation of half of the prize.

The VAT Wonder Goal award is a corporate social investment of the League Management Company (LMC) and is supported by the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS), using the league platform to promote its tax education campaign.
