Taekwondo: National Trials Open Championships kicks off this weekend

The much anticipated Nigeria Taekwondo Senior Open Trials will kick off this weekend at the Indoor Gymnasium, ABU Sports Hall, Zaria, Kaduna state.

Disclosing this to aclsports.com, Technical Director of the Nigeria Taekwondo federation (NTF), Chika Chukwumerije said 94 senior athletes consisting of 68 male and 26 female registered for the open championships.

Chukwumerije listed the teams as 10 states, 4 tertiary institutions, 8 private clubs, 1 Armed Forces and 1 para military.

The North Central has 7 teams, South West with 5 teams, followed by the North West with 4 teams, South East filed 3 teams, Armed Forces and para militaries paraded 2 and the South South region has 1.

“Today, the various teams will get accredited ones they arrive the venue of the trials. The male athletes consisting of weight categories;  -54kg, -58kg, -63kg, -68kg, -74kg, -80kg, -87kg and +87kg gets weigh-in and fight tomorrow which is Saturday. The head of team meeting and drawing of lots follows after the weigh in”, Chukwumerije said.

“After the male bouts, the weigh-in of the female athletes follows suit. The female categories are;  -46kg, -49kg, -53kg, -57kg, -63kg, -67kg, -73kg and +73kg. The female fights on Sunday which is the last day of the National trials”, he said

He said the federation plans having Teams who can represent Nigeria at various competitions.
