The Nigeria Wrestling Federation says it has increased the weight categories from eight to ten for the Governor Wike National Wrestling Championship.
The maiden Governor Wike National Wrestling Championship will hold in Port Harcourt, Rivers capital city from November 23rd to 30th, 2017
The United World Wrestling’s (UWW) Bureau last August officially approved the switch from eight to ten weight categories across all three disciplines.
Ongoing registeration
The Technical Director of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Damien Ohaike said a total of 90 weight classes in Greco-Roman, Female Wrestling and Men’s Freestyle. Damien told Aclsports.com that wrestlers at the championship will represent Nigeria at the 2018 African Wrestling Championship next year.
“Rivers state should expect the best wrestlers. Everyone wants to represent Nigeria at the African Championship and I’m sure it’s going to be competitive”.
“The reason for the moderation include the UWW Africa made slight adjustment because the discovered most athletes shed too weight when preparing for Championship. We want to use it to test run the athletes at the Rivers State Indoor Sports Complex”, he said.
