Nigeria female weightlifters (NWF) on Tuesday won nine gold medals at the ongoing African Junior/Youths Weightlifting Championships in Uganda.

The Technical Director of NWF, Chris Nwadei said Mary Uweh (-48kg), Islamiyat Yusuf (-53kg) and Fatima Yakuba (-58kg) won three gold medals apiece in the Snatch and Clean & Jerk events.

Nwadei revealed that the male lifters Joseph Edidong (-62kg), Agboro Omovigho (-62kg) and Micheal Chinemerem (- 85KG) also stand chances of increasing the medal tally for the country in Entebbe, Uganda.

“The female weightlifters have always proven to be the power house of the federation but I know this time around, the male will also gun for glory because the junior female lifters have set a standard”.

He believes that with such performances, the chances of the nation winning medals at the 2018 Olympics Youth Games are very high. The 2017 African Junior/Youths Weightlifting Championships ends on October 14th, 2017
