World football governing body, FIFA, has ordered South Africa and Senegal to replay their World Cup qualifying match held on November 12, 2016.

“The Bureau for the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers ordered a replay of the qualification match between South Africa and Senegal held on 12 November 2016. This decision follows the confirmation of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to uphold the lifetime ban of match referee, Joseph Lamptey,  match manipulation, the ruling imposed by the FIFA Disciplinary and Appeal Committees,” a statement by FIFA read on its official website.

“The match will be replayed within the November 2017 international window, with the exact date to be confirmed in due course.”

FIFA also stated that while the decision to replay the match takes effect immediately, it remains subject to confirmation by the body’s organising committee for competitions scheduled to meet September 14.

It would be recalled that in the match between South Africa and Senegal in November last year, centre referee, Lamptey made some questionable calls, including awarding a dubious penalty to South Africa, who ran out 2-1 winners and was accused of match manipulation.

The official was subsequently punished by FIFA in March this year, banning the Ghanaian from taking part in any kind of football-related activity (administrative, sports or any other) at national and international level for life.

South Africa are currently last in Group D on one point, four behind Senegal in third.
