The Nigeria Mixed Martial Arts Federation (NMMAF) is to stage a one day tournament aimed at harnessing talents from the grassroots.

The event tagged “Region of Heroes” is scheduled to take place on April 29 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

THE President (NMMAF), Ambassador Henry George, made the disclosure in an interview with aclsports.com on Thursday.

George who doubles as the President of DFC Africa said that the championship was aimed at discovering talents, who would be groomed to future champions.

“We are trying to discover hidden talents that can be groomed to represent the state in future competitions”, he said.

The former World Champion noted that it was part of plans of the Federation to help the government generate employment through Mixed Martial Arts.

“We want to assist our state governments to bring the boys out of the streets and generate employment so as to reduce the rate of crimes in the South South region and Nigeria in general. I’m aware not everybody can get employment from the sports Council”, George added.

“This program is the legacy we believe we can create for ourselves and the coming generation,” he said.

He also said, “Other sports should be given adequate attention and support. Every sport has the potential to bring this country glory and a very good image. We shouldn’t wait until football has a problem before we develop other sports, like Mixed Martial Arts.”
