Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) leaders Lobi Stars left it late to beat Rivers United 3-2 and go three points clear at the top on a dramatic evening in the league on Sunday.

Striker Austin Ogunye scored a stoppage time penalty to complete his brace against hard fighting United who had taken a 2-1 lead to the half time break.

Lobi’s nearest competitors Akwa United and Kano Pillars dropped points to accord the Pride of Benue some breathing space at the top.

United were held 1-1 at home by Abia Warriors in Uyo while Junior Lokosa’s twelfth goal of the season was not enough to prevent Kano Pillars from going down 2-1 at basement side Kwara United.

Reigning champions Plateau United went down to a Yaya Kone hattrick as Ifeanyiubah trashed Kennedy Boboye’s men 3-0 in Nnewi. Former champions Enyimba became the first team to score in Damaturu this season as they held Yobe Desert Stars 1-1.

In Omoku, hosts Go Round fought from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against Enugu Rangers. Ifeanyi George scored twice for the Flying Antelopes in the first half but Okon Otop and a Chile Azu stoppage time penalty ensured honours were even in the end.

In other results, Chijioke Akuneto came off the bench to score a brace as MFM came from behind to beat Katsina United 2-1 in Lagos while Macmarcel Obioha scored two penalties as Heartland edged Nasarawa United by the same scoreline in Owerri.

Wikki Tourists hammered El-Kanemi 3-0 in Jos with Shammah Tanze netting a brace while Niger Tornadoes continued their impressive form with a lone goal win over Sunshine Stars.
