Rivers Angels win bronze at the ongoing NWFL Super 6 in Asaba as the curtains are drawn in this season’s Nigerian Women Football League (NWFL) 2022/23 domestic season.

Angels  defeated Confluence Queens of Lokoja 2-0, courtesy of two quick-fire second-
half goals, to emerge second runners-up.

Rivers Angels came into the game with a point to prove, on the back of their 1-0 defeat against Bayelsa Queens which resulted in the suspension of two of their players after they accosted the centre referee. In the scorching Asaba sun, the Portharcourt side tried to lay down an early marker and
almost went in front, only to be denied by the post.

Rivers Angels had the less fancied Lokoja side on the ropes, but could not make their superiority count, as the half ended in a stalemate.

Sixteen minutes after the interval, Rivers Angels broke the deadlock through Adaobi Okah,
who tapped the ball into an empty net from a Chiamaka Okwuchukwu pass, as the opposition failed to
clear their lines. Seven minutes later, Rivers Angels doubled their lead through substitute, Ikehua Oghenebrume to cement their third position, with the N3 million kitty attached.

A victorious Coach Edwin Okon congratulated his side for their victory while admitting that the
opposition was not a pushover contrary to the opinion of many spectators.

“I am happy with the victory, a win is a win and we will take it, regardless of the opposition, but there are
no small teams in the NWFL anymore, there are no pushovers and any team can beat the other on their
day,” he said.

While the wins ensured Rivers Anges win bronze in Asaba, Okon also used the opportunity to charge the organizers of the league to improve the level of officiating, as
it would attract more investors to the league.
