The South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) matchday nine games kicked off with Daniel Akpeyi‘s Kaizer Chiefs facing Stanley Dimgba‘s Stellenbosch FC at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon.

Chiefs, who won away at Supersport United last time out, lost 1-0 to the unbeaten Stellies as pressure continues to mount on coach Stuart Baxter. Super Eagles goalkeeper Akpeyi made his fifth straight league start for Amakhosi, but couldn’t prevent his side from falling to a third defeat of the season.

On the other hand, Dimgba made his ninth consecutive appearance of the season but was subbed off in the 73rd minute by Coach Steve Barker. Former Nigeria U17 international Ibrahim Jabaar did not feature for the visitors due to card accumulation.

Highest scoring Nigerian in the PSL this season with five goals – Chibuike Ohizu – could not add to his tally when Sekhukhune United went to Soweto to face Olisa Ndah‘s Orlando Pirates. The former Akwa United defender played for 70 minutes before he was replaced by Kwanda Mngonyama, while Ohizu lasted 67 minutes in the crunch encounter as the Buccaneers won 2-1.

Meanwhile, Augustine Chidi Kwem was missing in TS Galaxy’s 2-1 win over Baroka FC at the Kameelrivier Stadium. The striker has not featured for the Rockets since the opening day goalless draw with Kaizer Chiefs.

To wrap things up on matchday nine, former Nigeria U20 captain Abduljeleel Ajagun and Cape Town City will hope to return to winning ways, having lost to Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN 8 Final on Saturday, when they host Chippa United at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday.

The Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates headlines the next round of games this coming weekend.
