Meanwhile, Kano Pillars male handball team on Tuesday in Abuja beat the Seasiders of Lagos 38-27. Kano Pillars were totally in control of the game, leading 16-11 by the break before going full throttle to close the game.

Solomon Yola, the coach of Kano Pillars, expressed delight at the performance of his players for winning their game.

“It was a very good match and we played well. The Lagos team is a very good side also. But we thank God for the victory and I’m happy with the result.

“We will be playing against the Nigerian Army team on Wednesday. Every team here is good, but all I know is that my team is very well prepared and ready for this competition.’’

Agboola Shittu, the Seasiders coach, said his team lost because they were not prepared for the game, adding that his players were match-rusty.

“Kano Pillars are one of the favourites at this competition. My players tried their best, but they could not defeat them.

“Our team was a little bit unprepared. But, nevertheless, we know that as times goes on, we will be able to groom them more to face competitions of this nature.

“We have a lot of national team players. So, we will know what to do next time. Fitness has been a major challenge for us, but we are looking forward in working on that.

“They are alongside our team one of the two best teams in the female category, and we gave them a tough time because my players were not ready to lose their first match in the league.

“Our opponents gave their best, but they were unable to defeat us.
