Asisat Oshoala wins UEFA Women’s Champions League title with Barcelona women…

Super Falcons forward, Asisat Oshoala won her second UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) trophy as Barcelona women completed a thrilling comeback to defeat Wolfsburg women 3-2 in a keenly contested final.

Prior to the final, it was announced that Oshoala would be unavailable after the Nigerian striker picked up an injury to her left hamstring. So Barcelona women went into the fixture one vital player short in attack.

It was the third successive UWCL final for the Spanish champions who barely overcame Chelsea women in a keenly contest semi-final. Having lost the final to tournament favourites, Lyon last season, the Spanish giants were determined to right the wrongs of the previous season despite the absence of their top striker, Oshoala.

It however didn’t look that way as Barcelona women were down by two goals in the first half.

Wolfsburg striker Ewa Pajor broke the deadlock as early as the 3rd minute before German legend, Alexandra Popp doubled their lead in the 37th minute.

After the break, the Spanish champions came out fighting with two quick-fire goals from PatrickF Guijarro in five minutes. Wolfsburg women were rattled and the cracks soon began to show.

The Spanish side exploited every opening, piling on attack after attack and in the 70th minute, the comeback was complete as Frida Rolfo found the back of the net to give her side the lead for the first time in the match.

As expected, Wolfsburg put on a late fight but Barcelona held on to win the match and a second UEFA Women’s Champions League title in three seasons.

As Oshoala wins another UEFA Women’s Champions League title, she becomes the first African player to win the tournament more than once.
