The NWFL has announced the postponement of the ongoing 2025/2026 Premiership season following complaints from one of the participating clubs over the call-up of more than five of its players to the Nigeria U-20 women’s national team, www.aclsports.com reports.
The decision was taken after the completion of Week 7 fixtures, with the league noting that the situation significantly affected the club’s ability to field a competitive squad.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, confirmed the development in an official circular addressed to all Premiership clubs, explaining that the decision was taken to preserve fairness and competitive balance.
“The ongoing 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership matches have been placed on hold after the completion of Week 7 fixtures following a formal complaint lodged with the Nigeria Football Federation by one of the participating clubs,” Shabi said.
She added that the league will resume with Week 8 fixtures on Wednesday, 18 February 2026, noting that the mid-season break will be limited to one week due to time constraints within the league calendar.
Adjusted fixtures reflecting the revised schedule have been circulated to all clubs, who have been advised to take note of the changes and ensure strict compliance.
The Nigeria U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, are currently training in Abuja ahead of their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying clash against Senegal.
While national team invitations are often celebrated as a mark of quality and progress, the development once again highlights the persistent tension between domestic competitions and international commitments.
