Debutants Ahudiyannem Queens, pulled off a shock on the opening day of the 2025 NWFL Championship, defeating eight-time NWFL Premiership champions Pelican Stars 2–0 in Abiriba, www.aclsports.com reports.
Guided by Super Falcons legend Ann Chiejine, the newcomers struck twice in the first half to announce themselves in style and move to the top of Group B1.
At the same venue, Wazbak Queens edged Chosen Generation Angels 1–0 thanks to Rasheedat Lateef’s 20th-minute strike. Imo Striker Queens impressed in Abiriba, running out 4–0 winners over Delta Babes after their game was halted by heavy rain and resumed on Sunday morning. Ugbala Osinachi opened the scoring in the 15th minute, while Oparanmegwa Pattra completed a hat-trick with strikes in the 52nd, 56th, and 65th minutes.
Moje Queens and Ghetto Tigers were also rescheduled due to weather and played out a 2–2 draw, with Jade Ebube giving Ghetto the early lead, Tawa Mustapha equalising, Mary Atume putting Moje ahead, and Chidera Isaiah levelling for Ghetto.
In Umuahia, Castmog Ladies defeated First Mahi Babes 3–1. Damilola Adeyanju opened the scoring, Elizabeth Adesuyi’s own goal briefly levelled the contest, but Temitope Dosunmu restored Castmog’s advantage in the 61st minute before Zainab Odueke sealed the win deep into stoppage time. Royal Queens and Gallant Queens shared the spoils in a 0–0 draw.
Sunshine Queens beat Fortress Ladies 3–0 with goals from Oluwabunmi Adenuga (30’), Mirabel Irabor (36’), and Precious Edewor (61’ pen), while Kwara Ladies and Unification FC also played to a 0–0 draw. Both of these matches were rescheduled and completed on Sunday.
All eyes now turn to matchday two, with Ahudiyannem Queens aiming to extend their surprise run at the top, while Pelican Stars look to bounce back. Castmog Ladies, Wazbak Queens, and other contenders will also be hoping to make their mark early in the 2025 NWFL Championship.
