
Kehinde Olanrewaju of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) and Iwara Mathias of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) completed the sprint double with victories in the 200m finals at the 27th Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Games, taking place at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) on Thursday, www.aclsports.com reports.
Olanrewaju, who won the 100m, finished the women’s 200m in 24.42 seconds, with Taofikat Sulaimon of FUOYE claiming silver in 24.92 seconds, and DELSU’s Favour Olise taking bronze in 24.94 seconds. On the men’s side, Iwara crossed the line in 21.30 seconds to secure gold, followed by BIU’s Julius Umechukwu with silver and TASUED’s Adeola Adeniji in third place.
In the men’s middle-distance events, Kenneth Zachariah of Bayero University Kano (BUK) claimed gold in the 1500m, with FUDM’s Tanimu Rabiu Abubakar taking silver and UNIJOS’ Ezekiel Davou finishing third. Davou later dominated the long-distance races, winning gold in both the 5000m and 10,000m finals. In the women’s 1500m, EKSU’s Oluwaseyifunmi Igbasan won gold, followed by Aishat Muhammed of Federal University Lokoja with silver and Plateau State University’s Aershimana Kerem claiming bronze.
The boxing finals saw Fagbola Faithia (OAU), Asiru Basit (OOU), and Enitan Yisa (LASUED) win their matches via walkover, while Ojo Christopher (LASU) and Rianat Adebayo (FUOYE) claimed convincing victories. Nentong Victor (UNIJOS), Kausara Olaifa (OOU), and Badung Shalom (UNIJOS) also secured medals in their respective categories.
In men’s football, EKSU defeated KASU 3-1, while FUTMINNA edged Taraba State University 2-1. In the women’s semifinals, defending champions UNILAG narrowly beat UNIZIK 1-0, and UNIJOS overcame FUOYE 2-1 to reach the final.
Squash semi-finals were dominated by OAU, who defeated FUNAB 2-0, and FUTMINNA, who overcame UNIUYO 2-0. In men’s basketball, ABU narrowly beat ABUAD 64-60, while UNIJOS defeated UNIBEN 58-47. On the beach volleyball courts, TSU’s female team blanked KASU 2-0.
