
Mathias Iwara of the University of Calabar and Kehinde Olanrewaju of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) won gold in the 100m finals at the 27th Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Games, taking place at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) on Tuesday, www.aclsports.com reports.
Iwara blazed through the men’s 100m final in a new Personal Best (PB) of 10.60s, edging out Adebayo Japhet of FUTA (10.74s) and Umechukwu Julius of Benson Idahosa University (10.84s) to claim top spot.
In the women’s race, Olanrewaju dominated the field, surging to gold in 11.81s, ahead of Taofikat Sulaimon of Federal University Oye-Ekiti (12.42s) and Favour Olise, who took bronze in 12.49s.
In hockey, UNIBEN edged UNIJOS 1–0 in the women’s match, while the men’s games produced dramatic outcomes. UNIJOS narrowly defeated BUK 1–0, TASUED routed UNIMAID 5–1, and ABU overcame BUK 1–0, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
UI demonstrated their strength in women’s handball, dominating BUK 9–0. On the volleyball courts, male teams TASUED, TSU, NSUK, UNIJOS, and BUK all secured straight-set victories, while FUTO defeated UAM 3–0. The women’s matches were equally intense, with BUK beating NSUK 3–2, and UOM blanking MOU 3–0.
Football results saw FUT MINNA and UNIJOS draw 1–1 in the men’s group stage, while LASU defeated UNICAL 1–0. In the women’s category, MOUAU overcame KASU 3–0, while AAU edged FUK 1–0.
The Games also featured baseball, softball, and flag football demonstrations, with Jesunifemi Tenten Asoore, head of the Nigeria American Football Association’s College Flag Football League, in attendance.
In boxing, the men’s quarter-finals saw Ridwan Odekanle of UNILAG defeat Odedina Olamide of FUOYE, while Williams Oche of UNIJOS overcame Buba Samaila of Aliko Dangote University.
Basketball action was equally compelling, as ABUAD defeated BUK 55–45, while Benue State University routed Michael Okpara University 89–41, keeping the competition fierce.
