Team Ogun, who were favourites before the final, breezed past Team Kwara 4-1 to claim gold in the Men’s football event at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Ogun State, www.aclsports.com reports.

Before the Ogun state players took to the pitch to play the final of men's Football, the home fans could already feel an incoming GOLD medal from their players; filling up the MKO Abiola sports complex to cheer their team.

It was a thing of joy for the hosts in front of a packed MKO Abiola Sports Arena, as they thumped Team Kwara in a one-sided men’s football final on Tuesday night.

Remo Stars defender, Ahmed Akinyele, named as one of the three professionals in the Ogun Team, headed home twice in the game’s opening ten minutes to hand the hosts a two-goal cushion. Team Kwara managed to pull one back through Yusuf Olatunji in an entertaining quarter of an hour.

The hosts were just too much for the side from Kwara, as they kept possession and continued to create chances at will in the game. And just before the half-time break, Team Ogun added another goal through Olawore Emmanuel to have their two-goal cushion restored. After the break, it was a bit competitive between the two sides before Emmanuel grabbed his second of the night to add icing on the cake.

In the end, Team Ogun took gold, Team Kwara silver, and IJA (invited junior athletes) beat Team Kaduna to claim bronze in the men’s category.

In the women’s final, penalty shootouts were needed to decide the winner between IJA (invited junior athletes) and Team Delta, as the match finished goalless. In the end, Team Delta triumphed 7-6 in the shootout to condemn the Nigeria U17 girls to a defeat in the final. Delta took gold, IJA silver, while Team Ogun took bronze.
