With the Commonwealth Games scheduled to run from 23 July to 2 August 2026, the agreement was reached after meetings involving the NSC, the Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN) and the British Cycling Association, and will see Team Nigeria cyclists undertake a training programme in Manchester ahead of the Games.
The British Cycling Association delegation, led by Commercial Strategy Manager Izza Ourzik, was on a collaborative visit to Nigeria, with discussions focusing on the development of cycling in the country, fair participation across Olympic and Paralympic programmes, and the sport’s wider social impact.
As part of the agreement, the Team Nigeria cycling contingent will prepare in Manchester in the build-up to Glasgow 2026, providing access to elite training facilities and technical support.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to providing enabling structures for sports development and stressed the importance of expanding cycling beyond elite circles.
NSC Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade confirmed that cycling will be among the sports Nigeria will compete in at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, following consultations with the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and the Elite Athletes Development and Podium Board.
Olopade added that the Cycling Federation of Nigeria remains one of the most vibrant federations in the country, noting that the collaboration with the British Cycling Association is expected to strengthen support for the sport.
The partnership forms part of Nigeria’s broader build-up to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
