Lagos side Ikorodu City defeated visiting Niger Tornadoes 2-0 in a keenly contested Nigeria Premier Football League game to return to the top of the log on Sunday, www.aclsports.com reports.
It was one of the match day 25 games decided on Sunday, as the Oga Boys continued their winning run at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos.
The game barely came to life in the first half, but when Ikorodu City were awarded a penalty for a foul on Chidera Oparaocha just after the hour mark, it was time for the fans to cheer for something. Winger Joseph Arumala stepped up to finish past the goalkeeper for his second consecutive league goal at home.
After the break, it was more open as the visitors started to see more of the ball and get into decent positions. Ahmadu Liman forced Ikorodu City goalkeeper Michael Atata into a great stop early on, before Abdulrasheed Dabai sent a dangerous ball into the area; but no one was there to turn the ball home.
In the dying embers of the contest, Ikorodu City, having weathered the storm, scored their second to see off the contest. Arumala was released on the counter by skipper Tosin Oyedokun, and the former’s tame shot found the back of the net. With the win, the Lagos side have won eight of their past ten league home matches. Consequently, they also moved to the summit of the log for the time being.
In Lafia, Nasarawa United missed a great chance to be outright leaders of the NPFL as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Bayelsa United. Victor John’s early strike was cancelled out by Energy Otunuya just before the break.
