Egypt captain Mohamed Salah could not hide his excitement following the Pharaohs’ first-ever win at the World Cup on Sunday, www.aclsports.com reports.
Finn Surman gave the All Whites a deserved lead with a bullet of a header from a corner in the 15th minute, but goals from Mostafa Zico, Mohamed Salah, and Trezeguet saw Egypt create history as they came from behind to beat New Zealand 3-1 and claim their first FIFA World Cup victory since making their debut 92 years and 25 days ago.
“It’s incredible. I don’t know how to express it in words,” Salah said after the game.
”It’s a great achievement for all the players, for the staff, so hopefully we can carry on like this in the group, and we can write history and qualify – and in years to come it will be remembered as one of the best achievements in the history [of Egyptian football]. We have to enjoy today, enjoy tomorrow, then focus on the next game,” concluded the former Liverpool star, who also claimed the Superior Player of the Match award.
On the other hand, goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir said he was pleased that the current group could achieve that, and hopes it is not going to be the last one for them.
“Getting the first win for our country, it’s just something…..I don’t know, I don’t have the words. I’m speechless, you know, it’s truly something great. We’re so happy to have achieved this. It’s the first one for Egypt in our history and, Inshallah, it’s not the last one,” Shobeir said.
The victory moves Egypt to the top of Group G and places them in a strong position before their final group match against Iran.
