Rasheedat Ajibade’s football journey has been a tale of relentless ambition, excellence, and progression through some of the world’s top women’s leagues. From her early days at FC Robo in the NWFL to gracing the fields of Norway and Spain, the Super Falcons captain is once again at a crossroad as she bids farewell to Atlético Madrid Femenino.
Ajibade joined Atlético Madrid in January 2021 from Norwegian club Avaldsnes IL, embarking on what would become a memorable four and a half year stint with Las Rojiblancas. The 24-year-old winger made 139 appearances and scored 40 goals for the Spanish side, becoming a central figure in the team’s attacking setup.
Her time in Spain was marked by silverware and standout performances. She played a crucial role in Atlético Madrid’s 2021 Spanish Super Cup triumph and the 2023 Copa de la Reina victory. Her pace, creativity, and eye for goal consistently made her a thorn in the flesh of opposition defences.
In a statement published on their official website and social media channels, Atlético Madrid lauded Ajibade’s “quality, speed, assists, and a lot of goals in her boots,” as they honored her alongside three other departing players; Marta Cardona, Ainhoa Moraza, and Merle Barth, following a 5–0 rout of Levante Badalona on the final day of the season at the Centro Deportivo Wanda Alcalá de Henares.
With her contract now expired, the football world eagerly anticipates Ajibade’s next move.
One potential destination being speculated is the United States of America (USA). The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has seen a rise in Nigerian talents, with the likes of Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, Favour Emmanuel, and most recently Gift Monday joining the league. Super Falcons legend Asisat Oshoala also made the switch to the U.S. last year after her own spell in Liga F.
Could Ajibade follow suit and link up with her Nigerian teammates in the NWSL?
For now, the future remains uncertain, but what’s clear is that wherever she lands, Rasheedat Ajibade will continue to be a force to reckon with. From Lagos to Madrid, her journey has inspired many and the next chapter promises to be just as impactful.
