Semi-finalists have emerged in the ‘Kanu Super Six’ football competition in Owerri, Imo state, South-East Nigeria.

‘Kanu Super Six’ is a 6-A-side football tournament being contested for by six tertiary institutions around South-east Nigeria and is sponsored by former African footballer of the Year Nwankwo Kanu.

Imo state based schools: Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State University, Owerri, Federal Polytechnic, Nekede and Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri are joined by Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOU) and University of Port Harcourt for the week-long tourney.

The competition being staged at the Kanu Sports Center in Owerri started on Monday with Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike beating Federal Polytechnic Nekede 3-1 while University of Port Harcourt lost 0-2 to Imo State University.

Alvan Ikoku College of Education drew their first game 1-1 against Michael Okpara University on Tuesday, a result that secured MOU’s passage to the semis with Imo State University joining their local rivals in the last four after a comprehensive 7-0 bashing of Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

The two remaining semifinal spots were decided on Wednesday and FUTO claimed one,  bouncing back from their ignominious defeat to edge University of Port Harcourt 3-2 while Alvan Ikoku College of Education progressed after a comfortable 4-0 victory over Federal Polytechnic Nekede.

Semifinal matches hold on Thursday at the Kanu Sports Center. The pairings indicate Alvan Ikoku College of Education will face FUTO while Imo State University and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture will contest the second semifinal game.

Final of the competition is expected to hold on Friday at the same venue. Kanu Super Six is an initiative of former Super Eagles and Arsenal star Kanu which he says is his own way of giving back to the community.
