Japan defeated hosts Australia 1–0 in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup final at Stadium Australia on Saturday to secure their third continental title, www.aclsports.com reports.
Maika Hamano scored the only goal of the final in the 17th minute, giving Japan a victory over Australia in front of a record crowd of 74,397. This marked the third time Japan have beaten Australia 1–0 in a Women’s Asian Cup final, following identical victories in 2014 and 2018.
The Matildas started brightly, looking dangerous through Caitlin Foord, Sam Kerr, and Ellie Carpenter, but it was Nadeshiko Japan who struck first. Hamano received a pass from captain Yui Hasegawa, cut outside the area, and sent a looping effort into the right-hand corner beyond goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold.
Under coach Nils Nielsen, Japan won all five matches leading to the final, controlling the midfield and largely limiting Australia’s attacking transitions. Despite enjoying periods of possession in the first half, the hosts created a few chances but were wasteful in front of goal, with some efforts off target and others denied by Japanese goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita.
After the break, Australia, led by coach Joe Montemurro, came out stronger in search of an equaliser. Emily van Egmond saw her effort blocked, while Alanna Kennedy came close with a header that was kept out as Japan’s defence held firm under pressure.
At the other end, Japan remained compact and disciplined, managing the game effectively as the second half became a contest of resilience. The hosts pushed relentlessly in the closing stages, but Japan also looked to extend their advantage, creating a few opportunities to score a second goal. Yamashita and the Japanese defence produced a series of crucial saves and blocks to preserve the lead, ensuring Japan secured the victory.
Japan finished the tournament unbeaten in six matches, scoring 29 goals and conceding just once. Ayaka Yamashita was named Best Goalkeeper with five clean sheets, while Riko Ueki emerged as the top scorer with six goals. Japan also received the Fair Play Award. Despite the defeat, Alanna Kennedy was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
By reaching the semi-finals, Japan, Australia, China, and South Korea secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, alongside North Korea and the Philippines, who won the play-in. Uzbekistan and Chinese Taipei will compete in the intercontinental play-offs for a chance to go to Brazil.
