The Super Falcons of Nigeria have made it out of the group stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup (FIFAWWC) for the first time in 20 years thanks to a 2-0 win over Thailand by Chile.
Having failed to pick a point against France, Nigeria needed results to go their way in Group D, E and F to have any chance of making it into the last 16.
Coming into Thursday’s match between Chile and Thailand, the Super Falcons needed a draw or not more than a two goal win margin for Chile who are on – 5 goal difference.
In the end, the Chileans scored twice and could have been through had they converted a penalty in the final stages of the match to make it three goals but it wasn’t to be as Nigerians reacted in ecstasy at the blast of the final whistle.
In the same vein, Cameroon qualified to the next round courtesy of a brace from Nchout Ajara on either side of a New Zealand goal with the winner being the last kick of the game.
This means that two African teams have made it into the round of 16 for the first time in the history of the FIFAWWC.
Nigeria will face Germany on Saturday afternoon while Cameroon do battle with England on Sunday for a spot in the quarter-final.
Now that we’ve got qualification for R16? Hope we don’t do a 13:0 or even a 4:0.
And Please someone should tell our centre forwards we need them to turn up for Saturday match.
