The West Africans held on for the win that means they are through to the next phase of the competition and lead Group A with six points.

Up next for them is tie against the hosts, Poland, who bounced back emphatically against whipping boys of the group, Tahiti, on Wednesday.

Italy joins Senegal

Another team to book their place in the round of 16 is European side, Italy.

The Italians saw off ten-man Ecuador, who had Jackson Porozo sent off for a malicious tackle, at Bydgoszcz thanks to a lone strike from the captain, Andrea Pinamonti.

Ecuador had a chance to get at least a point when they were awarded a penalty but Italy’s goalkeeper Alessandro Plizzari pulled off a brilliant stop to deny Leonardo Campana

Italy lead group B with six points and have also confirmed their place in the next round.

They face Japan on their final group game while Ecuador battle Mexico.
