African champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, remain the continent’s best women’s football team, according to the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking released on Thursday, www.aclsports.com reports.
Nigeria, fresh off a historic unbeaten run to win the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), their tenth continental title, retain their position as Africa’s top team and are ranked 36th globally. The update reflects a strong run of form for the team, who lifted the WAFCON trophy for the first time since 2018.
Since the previous FIFA ranking on June 12, 2025, Nigeria played three key international friendlies in preparation for the 2024 tournament. They began with a commanding 2-0 win over Cameroon, followed by a hard-fought goalless draw against Portugal, and wrapped up with an impressive 3-1 victory over Ghana.
These performances set the tone for a dominant showing at WAFCON 2024, where the Falcons went unbeaten under interim coach Justin Madugu to reclaim the continental crown. The triumph was a strong statement, particularly after falling short in the 2022 edition.
South Africa, champions in 2022, remain second in Africa and are ranked 54th in the world. WAFCON 2024 runners-up and hosts Morocco sit third in Africa and 64th globally.
Zambia follow closely in 65th (fourth in Africa), while Cameroon and Ghana are ranked fifth and sixth on the continent, 66th and 67th globally, respectively. Rounding out Africa’s top 10 are Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Algeria, and Senegal.
Globally, reigning world champions Spain have climbed to the top of the World Ranking, overtaking the United States, who drop to second. This reshuffle comes despite Spain’s loss to England in the UEFA Women’s Euro final. Sweden and European champions England occupy the third and fourth spots, respectively, with Germany falling to fifth and France in sixth. Copa América Femenina winners Brazil are ranked seventh.
The next edition of the FIFA Women’s World Ranking will be published on December 11, 2025.
