Nigeria’s Junior Female YellowGreens defeated Uganda by four wickets in their ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier Division 1 opener in Tanzania on Sunday, www.aclsports.com reports.
The Nigerian side held their nerve in a low-scoring contest at the Estim, TCA Cricket Arena, chasing down Uganda’s 59 for 7 in 13.1 overs to begin their campaign on a winning note.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Uganda were restricted to 59 for 7 in their 20 overs as Nigeria’s bowlers kept the scoring under control. Chisom Okpe led the attack with an excellent spell of 2 for 4 from four overs, while Peace Usen claimed 2 for 12. Shadiah Gilingish Nabulime top-scored for Uganda with 22 off 34 balls, including three boundaries, while Jimia Abdallah Mohamed added 13 off 25 deliveries.
Nigeria’s chase was made difficult by Uganda’s Tino Sarah, who produced an outstanding spell of 5 for 13 from four overs, including two maidens. Omosigho Eguakun steadied the innings with 24 off 29 balls, while captain Christabel Chukwuonye contributed a crucial 13 from 10 deliveries, including three boundaries.
Despite Sarah’s five-wicket haul, Nigeria reached 60 for 6 in 13.1 overs to secure a four-wicket victory.
The qualifier runs from August 30 to September 5 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Nigeria will face Malawi in their second match on Monday, August 31, at 7:30am WAT before meeting hosts Tanzania in their final group-stage game.
