Spineless Rivers United were thumped 4-1 by Pyramids of Egypt in their CAF Champions League match day five encounter on Sunday, www.aclsports.com reports.

The Pride of Rivers, having picked up just a point in their previous four group matches, needed a win to stand a slim chance of reaching the next round of the competition.

Despite scoring first through defender Stephen Manyo, it was the defending champions who rallied back to take a comprehensive win away from the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

After a cagey half-hour, Rivers United took the lead. Former Enyimba defender Manyo sent an unstoppable strike into the back of the net from a freekick routine. Finidi George’s side then managed to take the lead into the break.

After the interval, Pyramids came out flying and they got themselves levelled through Mostafa Fathi in the 52nd minute before going in front via Marwan Hamdi’s goal from the penalty spot in the 77th minute.

The Pride of Rivers continued chasing the game from there, but there was no way back when the visitors added two further goals from Odeh Al Fakhouri and Nasser Maher in the dying embers of the game.

In end, it finished in a comprehensive win for the defending champions, as Rivers United exit the competition bottom of the group.

Rivers United will now travel to face RS Berkane of Morocco in their final group game, while Pyramids will also host Power Dynamos of Zambia next weekend.
