The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be used in the finals of the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

It would be the first time for the VAR in the above competitions which are CAF’s main inter club tournaments.

However, the technology was used in the CAF Super Cup last February between Wydad Casablanca and TP Mazembe (1-0).

“It is historic. We (CAF) will be the first Confederation to use VAR in Inter-club competitions,” said Amr Famhy, CAF general secretary.

A training workshop will be organised for six referees and six linesmen at CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt by end of the month, according to Famhy.

Al-Ahly, ES Sétif, Espérance de Tunis and Primeiro de Agosto are in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League, with the final set for early next month.

Enyimba FC, Raja Casablanca, Al-Masry and AS Vita Club are the remaining teams vying for this year’s CAF Confederation Cup.
